Time to lead the World

by danielbarker on 4 September, 2015

Despite all the recent publicity showing what terrible human tragedies are taking place because of the refugee crisis, David Cameron is refusing to allow more refugees into the UK. We’ve taken only 7,000 refugees from war-torn Syria since 2011; Germany in contrast has agreed to take in 800,000 this year alone. Arguably, the UK had a hand in the events leading to this crisis. I’m not saying the decision was right or wrong, but we could have got involved militarily in Syria but chose not to. How could we not know that a worsening situation in Syria would lead to a massive refugee crisis?

The only thing we have done right so far is to fund accommodation for refugees through our overseas aid budget. UKIP’s policy of scrapping our overseas aid budget would therefore force many more refugees into putting their lives at risk; it would make matters far worse and increase the number of terrible scenes being broadcast. Why it takes such terrible images to force us to behave like decent human beings I’ll never know!

What we should be doing now is taking a lead, actively helping refugees out of danger by sending out rescue ships and planes. Instead we are sitting back, watching the tragedy evolve, pulling up the drawbridge and letting children drown. We are forefeiting our right to be called a Christian country. Come on Cameron! You won the election, now its time to lead the world.
