North-South divide emphasises need for further devolution

by danielbarker on 20 January, 2015

A new report from Centre for Cities has found that for every 12 new private sector jobs created in cities in the South of England over the past 10 years, one private sector job has disappeared in the rest of Britain. The report, Cities Outlook 2015, showed London and the South East enjoyed rising employment and growth while seven of the 10 cities with the lowest jobs growth were in the North of England. Milton Keynes topped the league table for the best-performing city. The Guardian’s Larry Elliott argues that the free market approach has not worked and that the report shows greater devolution of powers to cities is more pressing than ever.
