Everyone can help shape Sutton’s ambitious climate emergency plans

The Council is calling on all those living, working or studying in the borough to shape its ambitious plans to help tackle the climate emergency.

These plans will outline what everyone can do to minimise the impact of climate change and will support the Council’s aim to improve the environment for all residents

Last July, Sutton councillors declared a climate emergency and agreed a target of reducing carbon emissions in the borough to zero. To play its part in slowing down global warming, the Council has placed solar panels on its buildings, launched a strategy to reduce waste and installed sustainable drainage measures in school grounds to reduce flood risk locally.

However, the Council is responsible for less than 3% of emissions in Sutton. We are seeking ideas on how individuals, businesses, local and national government should respond to the climate emergency.  

Events will be held across Sutton between mid-February and mid-March, and people will be able to give their views online. The events will allow feedback on possible actions and barriers which prevent more being done to tackle the climate emergency. All the views will help to shape the borough’s new Climate Emergency Action Plan. 

Councillor Manuel Abellan, Chair of Sutton Council’s Environment and Neighbourhood Committee, said:

“We have been working with local communities to deliver our ambitious Environment Strategy, which sets out what we are doing to make Sutton the most sustainable London borough.  

“But we all need to go even further and faster. I am calling on everyone to help make Sutton an even better place to live, work and raise a family – now and in the future. 

“Come to our events, engage with us online and share your solutions for Sutton. Even actions which might seem small can make a huge difference. Let’s work together to create a cleaner, greener Sutton.”
