My letter to the Council regarding ‘The Brown Jug’

by danielbarker on 3 February, 2020

I am sure I speak on behalf of many residents in Short Heath when I say I am very concerned that there is still no sign that the planning application approved for the site of the old Brown Jug Public House on Sandbeds Road is being acted upon.

Yes, it is true that the applicant technically has three years from the approval to implement the consent, which was granted back in May last year.

However, this site has been a derelict eyesore for many years, and it is deeply frustrating that the building hasn’t even been demolished yet.

Two years ago, the Council was pursuing enforcement action against the owners of the site. Had it not been for this planning application, the owners would have been forced to comply or the Council would have stepped in, demolished the pub, cleared the site and sent the bill to the owners.

As it happens, the planning application, rather than move things on, appears to have prevented the site being improved, at least in the short term. Frustratingly, this happened a few years ago when the owners put forward a different application on the site which was never enacted and appeared to be a delaying tactic.

Considering how long this site has been in this state of wrack and ruin, I and many others now believe that it is time for urgent action to get the demolition and clearance back on track.

The sooner this site has been cleared, ready to be developed, the better.

I hope to receive from you some reassurance that the Council will not let this site fester for another two years plus, but will act to ensure the granted planning application will be enacted as soon as possible.

The wishes of local residents, who have been badgering their councillors about this site for years, must be taken into consideration given the history of events that I have outlined.

I look forward to your swift response,

Dan Barker
