Arch-Brexiteer claims the Brexit deal will make things worse

by danielbarker on 15 November, 2018

Former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said to the press yesterday the following:

For the first time in a thousand years, this place, this parliament, will not have a say over the laws that govern this country. It is a quite incredible state of affairs.”

Mr Johnson continued: “For the first time since partition, Dublin – under these proposals – would have more say in some aspects of the government of Northern Ireland than London.

“I don’t see how you can support it from a democratic point of view, I don’t see how unionists can support it, and I don’t see how you can support it if you believe in the economic and political freedom of this country.”

In other words, the only Brexit deal on the table would make things worse for people, particularly in regards to democracy. No one could argue that Theresa May hasn’t tried hard to get a deal. It may be that this is the best deal she could have got. And yet even the man who lead the ‘leave’ campaign says this deal will make things worse than the status quo.

It’s also an admission – if you re-read the bold type above – that parliament DOES currently have a say over the laws that govern this country, despite our current membership of the EU. This flies in the face of what Leave were telling people in the referendum campaign; that people needed us to leave the EU ‘to take back control’. It’s an admission that we already do have control; for instance, as an EU member we could veto the creation of a European army, an idea recently floated by the French President Macron.

It’s true that some Remain politicians – like former Chancellor George Osbourne – may have exaggerated the impact of voting to leave as a means of persuasion. But this is nothing compared to the bare-faced lies that members of the Leave campaign came out with. Many people believed these lies, and that is why I can’t accept Corbyn’s assertion that we should ‘respect the vote’. What I do respect is the reason many people chose ‘leave’ is because they feel they are not being listened to by government. Both sides in the referendum now agree this deal will make things worse.

The politicians have had their time over the past two years to try and get things right. Now I say it’s time to take back control; it’s time for a People’s Vote on Theresa May’s Brexit deal.
