Chaos in the Commons / words of wisdom

by danielbarker on 14 June, 2018

Chaos has ruled in the Commons over the past couple of days, with both Labour and the Conservatives hopelessly split over how to vote on Brexit matters. All this time spent on this mess when they should be getting on with the real business of government – sorting out the national crisis in social care, the NHS and homelessness!

However, amidst the chaos, some words or wisdom were spoken by former justice minister Phillip Lee (who resigned from the Government on Tuesday), who said:
‘The practicalities, logistics and implications of leaving the EU are far more complex than was ever envisaged and certainly more complex than people were told in 2016. The UK is not going to be ready in time, neither is the EU, and both would suffer from a rushed or fudged agreement.’

Elsewhere, the Chief Exec. of the CBI said it how he saw it:
‘If we do not have a customs union, there are sectors of manufacturing society in the UK which risk becoming extinct. Be in no doubt, that is the reality.’
He singled out the car industry as particularly at risk:
‘There is zero evidence independent trade deals will provide any economic benefit to the UK that’s material. It’s a myth’.
