New powers see swift action to evict unauthorised encampment

by danielbarker on 24 November, 2017

Action taken by the progressive alliance between Labour and the Liberal Democrats currently running Walsall Council in respect of Unauthorised Encampments paid off today when a group of travellers who attempted to set up an encampment on the Wakes car park were evicted within hours.

The Wakes car park in Willenhall is one of 11 sites which have been added to the original 12 covered by injunctions which give the Council authorisation to evict travellers camped on the sites more quickly and save taxpayers money from expensive court proceedings, officer time the cost of clearing sites.

Cllr Ian Shires, the Portfolio Holder with responsibility for dealing with unauthorised encampments praised the officers for all the hard work that had gone into securing the injunctions through the courts earlier this month. “All that work has clearly paid off today as community protection officers and Police were able to clear the site within hours. Work is progressing to identify a suitable transit site within the borough which will give even more powers to deal with unauthorised encampments.” said Ian.

What little rubbish left behind on the Wakes car park will be removed by Clean and Green.
