Nick Clegg says he would like his party to run the Department for Education if it forms part of a coalition government. The Deputy Prime Minister said the Liberal Democrats were the “party of education” and that he wanted to build on its “great work” in coalition. The party has said all teachers will be required to have formal education qualifications and that it would cut down the national curriculum in a bid to “get politics out of the classroom.” It is believed that Mr Clegg’s preferred choice for education secretary is current Schools Minister David Laws.
