Norman Lamb – end suicide within NHS care

by danielbarker on 20 January, 2015

This is a difficult subject to talk about but did you know that around 4,700 people take their own lives each year in England & Wales, the majority of them being male?
In fact, suicide remains one of the biggest killers for men aged under 50.
We can’t help those who took their lives but we can help prevent more suicides in the future by providing better mental health care.
That’s why I’ve called on NHS Trusts to set a ‘zero suicide’ ambition. This means making sure patients aren’t forgotten if they move or leave the health service. It also means working together with family and friends so they know how to better support their loved ones.
Suicide is a major taboo in our society but we know ambitious approaches like this can work. In Detroit USA, a healthcare provider completely eliminated suicide by changing the way they tackled mental illnesses.

And in the UK we’ve already made a start. A trust in Merseyside as well as regions across the UK are taking up the challenge of rethinking the way they treat people with mental illnesses. But we need your help to make the rest of the NHS end suicide within their care.
To get the message out and raise awareness of our plans will you share our campaign on Facebook?
