Welby: Free school meals should be extended

by danielbarker on 8 December, 2014

The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Justin Welby, has called on the Government for more help to prevent families going hungry. In a Parliamentary report, which is jointly backed by Labour MP Frank Field and the Bishop of Truro, he will call for at least £150m of state-backed support to combat hunger. The Mail claims that the report will suggest that free school meals are rolled out to children in the school holidays, with primary school children receiving them immediately, costing £130m a year. It also recommends that the Government considers extending the scheme to secondary school pupils. Other measures suggested include upping the minimum wage, forcing supermarkets to hand out unsold food to the poor and bigger food banks.
