Elections open to fraud

A report from the Policy Exchange think-tank has found that the way elections are run in Britain is “dangerously inefficient and seriously open to fraud”. The study predicts that there could be as many as 13m errors on the electoral roll for May’s general election. In 2005, there were about 7m errors, compared with between 13 and 15.5m in 2011 and 2014. The think-tank said that £80 speeding ticket-style civil penalties should become the norm to encourage people to sign up to the electoral roll. Meanwhile, rebates of up to £10 on council tax bills are seen as an initial carrot. The report also called for all electoral registers to be combined into a “cloud-based” database and for electoral registration officers and returning officers to be made subject to the Freedom of Information Act.
