English regions call for more powers

by danielbarker on 23 September, 2014

Leaders of English regions and cities have used the fallout from the Scottish referendum to call for a new range of powers. Councillors in the southwest called for a National Assembly for Cornwall. Carwyn Jones, the Welsh first minister, claimed the UK was “dead ” as he set out his proposals for greater devolution in Wales. Boris Johnson, the mayor of London, claimed that London and England’s eight core cities should be given extra powers to match those offered to Scotland. David Sparks, chairman of the Local Government Association, agreed with Mr Johnson’s view. “The appetite does not stop at the border and the rest of the UK will not be content to settle for the status quo,” Mr Sparks said. Simon Parker, head of the New Local Government Network, said the Scottish referendum had opened the floodgates for greater autonomy in English councils. “The starting point is a clear programme of devolution to the cities and shires that puts them in control of their economic destiny, rapidly followed by greater control over education and health policy.”
