The Times looks forward to revisions to GDP figures expected to show on Tuesday that Britain’s recovery is stronger and more sustainable than first thought. Britain’s official statistics are being updated to a new European standard. “Further upward revisions would better match the data with survey indicators and rapid employment growth, and would move the UK closer to the US experience and away from the eurozone,” said Rob Wood, UK economist at Berenberg.

Tourism industry booming

Britain’s tourism industry is booming, with employment in the sector rising at nearly double the rate of the rest of the jobs market. The ONS said that growth in tourism jobs reached 5.4% between 2009 and 2013, compared with 2.4% jobs growth across other sectors. The food and drink industry achieved the most impressive growth, at 8.8%, an increase of 99,900 jobs. Self-employment in culture rose by 22%, or another 41,000 workers.
